    Monroe-Woodbury boys, Cornwall girls claim OCIAA track and field championships

    There were a host of meet records and repeat winners at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association track and field championships at Warwick.

    The Monroe-Woodbury boys and Cornwall girls ran away with the team titles.

    Madison Williams of Pine Bush became a three-time winner in the long jump, setting a meet mark at 19 feet, one-quarter inch — Katina Mack of Monticello owned the old mark of 18- 9.25 inches from 1990. Williams also became a three-time winner in the triple jump, setting a meet mark at 39 feet, 4.25 inches, breaking the 2010 mark of 38-11.5 by Soroya Hudson of Cornwall — Shanta Mack of Monticello was the last three-time repeat winner (1995-97).

    Ella Michelitch of Minisink Valley won the high jump at a record 5 feet, 8 inches, repeating as the event champ for the first time in 25 years.

    Two boys records were set. Goshen’s Dametrious Esannason won the 200 in 21.42 seconds — Khadeem Richards of Monticello had the old mark of 21.78 in 2017. Warwick’s Luke Beattie repeated as the pole vault champ, at 16 feet, tying the 2014 mark of Warwick’s Todd Uckermark. Beattie also won the 100 meters in 10.99 seconds.

    Minisink Valley’s Kessler Hirsch because a three-time winner in both the girls 100 meters (12.57) and 200 (24.92) — she is the second to do so in the 100 since Jamie Hedgecock of Warwick (1994-96) and the first to do so at 200.

    Maia Rich of Kingston was a repeat winner in the 100 hurdles (14.35) — Laura Paul of Monroe-Woodbury has the fastest meet time (14.0) in 2001.

    GIRLS RESULTS: Section 9 girls track and field scores, schedule for the 2024 season

    Ella Galloway of Pine Bush repeated as pole vault winner, clearing a meet-tying record of 12 feet, 6 inches, for the second year in a row.

    Victoria Hinchcliff of Cornwall repeated as pentathlon champ with 2,599 points (20 shy of her 2023 mark).

    BOYS RESULTS: Section 9 boys track and field scores, schedule for the 2024 season

    Ellis Urgent of Cornwall repeated as boys long jump champ, the first to do so since David Jones of Washingtonville in 1986-87. Joshua Dymond of Pine Bush repeated in the discus, the first since Alec Faldermeyer of Minisink Valley in 2009-10.

    Other female winners included Amaya Grant of Monroe-Woodbury (400); Shaylen Goslar of Pine Bush (800); Hazel Lewis of Kingston (1,500); Anna Furman of Tri-Valley (3,000); Caigan Leonard of Cornwall (62.49 in the 400 hurdles, fastest winning time in 11 years); Olivia DeCarvalho of Washingtonville (2,000 steeplechase); Giada Puliga of Minisink Valley (shot put); Daniella Johnson of Kingston (discus); and, Maya Tudrej of Burke Catholic (javelin).

    The Monroe-Woodbury boys got wins from Ronaldo Rodriguez Perez (800); Gavin Catherwood (3,200); Devon Ryan (3,000 steeplechase); Jared Durand (shot put);

    Other male winners included Isaiah Young of Fallsburg (400); Gavin Rossi of Minisink Valley (1,600, only 0.35 seconds off the meet mark); Ilunga Salerno of Cornwall (110 hurdles); Noah Spiak of Beacon (400 hurdles); Plexico Brooks of Pine Bush (high jump); and, Damani DeLoatch of Beacon (triple jump).
