TOWN OF NEWBURGH - A Newburgh man was charged with robbery after he allegedly stole items from a car parked in a handicapped space in a supermarket parking lot.

Town of Newburgh police said officers responded to Market 32 on North Plank Road around noon on Thursday for a report of a fight in progress.

An investigation determined that Nicholaus Mikus, 40, was stealing items from a vehicle parked in a handicapped parking spot.

Police said the owner of the vehicle discovered Mikus taking their property, and a confrontation ensued.

Police said Mikus also got into a physical confrontation with a bystander who tried to help the victim.

Mikus displayed a weapon − police did not say what it was − and fled the area in a vehicle.

A short time later, Mikus and his vehicle were located in the city of Poughkeepsie. He was brought back to the town of Newburgh, where he was arrested and charged with third-degree robbery, a felony, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.

Mikus then was taken to the Orange County Sheriff's office, where he was arraigned and sent without bail to the Orange County Jail, pending a Tuesday appearance in Town of Newburgh Justice Court.

The name of Mikus' attorney was not immediately available.

I bet he won't show for court. Doesn't matter though...This country seems to love letting trash back out on the streets.
