NY owes over 4,000 Orange County residents, businesses money. See if you're on the list

A quick check of the state's database of unclaimed funds shows 1,167 residents or businesses in Middletown have money waiting for them. There are 1,428 owed in Newburgh, 824 in Chester, 507 in Monroe and 306 residents or businesses in Warwick who have refunds awaiting them.

For years, the New York state Comptroller's Office has accumulated money that has gone unclaimed, but it's up to residents to determine whether their name appears in the database and to follow the process of recovering the money owed.

There is no fee to reclaim funds, and if the money isn't claimed after several years, it goes into the state's general fund to pay for programs and services.

Here's how to get started.

Type a name in the unclaimed funds database , which is created by the USA TODAY Network in New York with data provided by the Comptroller’s Office.

If your name is on the list — the database will show you if you are owed as little as $3 since 1985 — there are three options for claiming your money:

• Visit the Comptroller's website at osc.state.ny.us/ouf
• Make a claim by mail: The New York State Comptroller's Office of Unclaimed Funds, 110 State St., Albany, NY 12236.
• Call (800) 221-9311
