    Local roundup: Hazleton Area field hockey earns close win

    Hazleton Area scored two late third-quarter goals and held on down the stretch to pull out a 3-2 victory over Stroudsburg in field hockey competition on Saturday.

    After Abigail Smithnosky’s goal with 57 seconds left in the third quarter tied the game at 2, Bella Boyle put Hazleton Area ahead, scoring with six seconds left in the quarter.

    The goal was Boyle’s second of the day. Gabby Bredbenner added two assists for the Cougars.

    Wyoming Valley West 8, Pittston Area 1

    Laila Zdancewicz scored four goals and assisted on two others as Wyoming Valley West rolled past Pittston Area.

    Riley Dwyer scored twice, both with Zdancewicz assists. Ava Mullery added two goals and an assist for Valley West.

    Maddie Karp scored the lone goal of the game for Pittston Area. Karlie Podwika made 20 saves.

    Nanticoke Area 7, MMI Prep 0

    Giovanni Huertero and Ethan Ball each recorded a hat trick to power the Trojans to a decisive win. Huertero a pair of assists while Hector Alvarenga rounded out the scoring.

    Derek Miller made three saves for the shutout.

    GIRLS SOCCER

    Wyoming Area 5, Honesdale 0

    Adie Kostik and Ava Musinski each scored twice as Wyoming Area shut out Honesdale.

    Kostik also had two assists for the Warriors. Ella Shepulski added the final goal in the victory.

    Rachele Chee made 20 saves in goal for Honesdale.

    Valley View 3, Wyoming Valley West 2

    The Spartans got second-half goals from Abby Singer and Lola Wojciechowski but fell short in a non-conference matchup.

    Callie Gillen scored twice for the Cougars, including the game-winner with just under 10 minutes left.

    BOYS SOCCER

    Tunkhannock 3, Mid Valley 0

    Caden Newswanger scored twice, including once on a penalty kick, as Tunkhannock picked up a non-league win.

    Newswanger assisted on the Tigers’ third goal, a second-half score from Ryan Negvesky. Elijah Faux made 12 saves for Tunkhannock.
