    Accountant sentenced for embezzling $1.5 million from Wilkes-Barre company

    SCRANTON — An accountant from Wilkes-Barre who admitted to embezzling more than $1.5 million from his former employer was sentenced to federal prison Monday.

    U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion sentenced Lawrence Malachefski, 39, to 30 months in federal prison for wire fraud. Malachefski pled guilty to the charge in April.

    According to a news release from U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Malachefski while serving as a financial controller for a Wilkes-Barre based Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning business, he embezzled more than $1.5 million for personal use between March 21, 2023 and June 13, 2023. Malachefski spent the money primarily on online sports betting websites, including FanDuel, Barstool Sports, DraftKings and Unibet.

    During his sentencing hearing, Malachefski was ordered to pay $1,586,557.45 in restitution to the company.
