WILKES-BARRE — Schiel’s Family Market on Hanover Street in South Wilkes-Barre is closed as the popular grocery business sustained flooding Thursday night.

Heavy downpours from thunderstorms drenched the area, but it appeared South Wilkes-Barre received the brunt of flooding as a section of Hanover Street, the area of South Main and Wood streets, and a section of Blackman Street near New Frederick Street were inundated by high water.

Clogged storm catch basins flooded Hanover Street and expanded into the family market’s parking lot and store.

A sign on a store window states the business will remain closed until further notice, the same message was posted on the Schiel’s Family Market Facebook page.

Crews were at the family market to begin the clean-up process early Friday morning.

Schiel’s Family Market on George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, remains open.

Saturday’s weather involves scattered severe thunderstorms, strong winds and localized heavy rain across Northeastern Pennsylvania.
