    Local roundup: Second half scoring fuels Valley West boys soccer

    Wyoming Valley West scored twice in the second half to break a halftime tie and pick up a 4-2 victory over Hazleton Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference boys soccer match on Wednesday.

    Aiden Kaminski scored both first-half goals for the Spartans, who were tied 2-2 with Hazleton Area at the half. Maksym Iracki and Noah Fetko each scored in the second half to pull their team away.

    Radames Cordero and Brian Quijandria each scored a goal for the Cougars.

    Crestwood 2, Pittston Area 1

    Colin Gordon buried two direct kicks for goals to lead Crestwood past Pittston Area.

    Both of Gordon’s goals came in the first half, the second one giving Crestwood a 2-1 lead that would stand up to the final whistle.

    Gavin Wolfe scored the lone goal for Pittston Area.

    GIRLS SOCCER

    Lake-Lehman 4, Wyoming Seminary 0

    Four different Black Knights found the back of the net in Lake-Lehman’s win over Wyoming Seminary.

    Lexi Peiffer, Kinley Purdy, Hannah Chipego and Ashley Hudak each scored for Lake-Lehman.

    Avery Luksic made 11 saves for Wyoming Seminary.

    FIELD HOCKEY

    Crestwood 2, Lake-Lehman 1

    A defensive battle went the way of the Comets, with Ava McConnell and Alyse Wanchisen each scoring to lead Crestwood to victory.

    Kasey Obes and Alex Geiger assisted on the goals for Crestwood. Madi Geiger made nine saves to preserve the win.

    Bella DeCesaris scored the lone goal for Lake-Lehman, assisted by Sage Morgan. Ruby Sorber made 10 saves.

    Hazleton Area 7, Wyoming Seminary 4

    Faith Russo scored a hat trick as the Cougars held off Wyoming Seminary.

    Additional goals were scored by Addison Bobrowski, Kylie Sisock and Bella Boyle. Gabriella Bredbenner had four assists.

    Wyoming Seminary had one goal each from Issy Shoemaker, Apollonia Bruno, Dallas Hanson-Richard and Emmy Swartz.

    Wyoming Area 10, Wilkes-Barre Area 0

    Ella McKernan and Lyla Rehill each notched a hat trick as the Warriors shut out Wilkes-Barre Area.

    Lucia Campenni scored two goals for Wyoming Area, while Talia Pizano and Sophia Risley scored a goal each.

    GIRLS TENNIS

    Berwick 3, Hazleton Area 2

    The Bulldogs rallied to win the match by sweeping the two doubles points.

    The duos of Ashlyn Marshman and Lauren Ashworth, and Mahi Brahmbhatt and Skye Tenenes each won in doubles for Berwick. Audra Lear picked up a crucial win in singles for the Bulldogs.

    Nanci Major and Mia Harmonosky won in singles for Hazleton Area.

    Wyoming Seminary 5, Hanover Area 0

    The Blue Knights won all five matches in straight sets to cap off a sweep of Hanover Area. Addison Priebe, Elisabeth Moules and Kimi Li each won in singles for Seminary.

    The duos of Cecilia Pons and Kathleen Minella, and Anisa Moyhuddin and Maureen Dougherty won the two doubles points for the Blue Knights.

    GOLF

    Seminary wins tri-match

    Nick Werner’s even-par 36 was the low score of the day and led the Blue Knights past Berwick and Wilkes-Barre Area.

    Seminary shot a team score of 155, with Berwick finishing at 166. The Bulldogs were able to split the day with a victory over Wilkes-Barre Area, who shot a 172 as a team.

    Jackson Matash and Grant Evensen each shot 39 for Berwick. Brady Gerrity shot a 38 to lead Wilkes-Barre Area, earning medalist honors in the head-to-head match with Berwick.

    Wyoming Valley West 179, MMI Prep 180

    Despite not winning the individual medal, the Spartans turned in a strong overall effort and held off MMI Prep by a single stroke.

    Kaden Dittus led Valley West with a 42, followed by Ken Craig at 44 and Chris McNew with a 45.

    Joe Mayernik won medalist honors for MMI Prep, carding a 39.

    Lake-Lehman 149, Crestwood 159

    Charlie Weidner shot a one-under-par 35 to win medalist honors and lead Lake-Lehman to a win over Crestwood.

    AJ Borchert added a 36 for the Black Knights, while Jackson Norconk and Von Voelker each shot 39s.

    Sienna Smith shot a 37 to lead Crestwood, with Tommy Biscotti a stroke back with a score of 38.

    Hazleton Area 169, Wyoming Area 176

    Gabe Fatula earned medalist honors with a 39 as the Cougars held off Wyoming Area.

    Luke Palmieri added a 41 for Hazleton Area in the win.

    Rob Yatsko was the low scorer for Wyoming Area with a score of 40.

    GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

    Lake-Lehman 3, Tunkhannock 2

    The Black Knights rallied from a set down to take the final two sets and win the match.

    Lake-Lehman won the first set 25-19, but Tunkhannock won the second and third sets by 26-24 and 25-18 scores. Lake-Lehman tied the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set, and won the fifth set 15-6 to seal the match.

    Ella Wilson had 22 kills, four blocks and 4 aces for Lake-Lehman. Giolla Biscotto had 14 assists and 14 service points.

    Berwick 3, Nanticoke Area 0

    Zoey Force had 11 aces, 24 service points and 12 digs to lead Berwick to a sweep of Nanticoke Area. Set scores were 25-12, 25-7 and 25-11.

    Angie Colone led the Bulldogs with 14 kills, while Julia Rauch had 33 assists and 10 service points.

    Amiah Ceruti had three kills for Nanticoke Area. Haley Verazin had six digs.

    Pittston Area 3, MMI Prep 1

    The Patriots recovered after a third-set loss to wrap up the match in four sets, beating MMI Prep.

    Pittston Area won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-8 before MMI rallied to win the third set 25-19. The Patriots responded with a 25-17 win in the fourth set to end the match and pick up the win.

    BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

    Royals sweep cluster

    The Royals had the top three individual finishers and picked up wins over Wyoming Seminary, Nanticoke Area and Hanover Area.

    Joshua Cackowski was the top overall finisher with a time of 18:02. His Redeemer teammates Sean Williams and Patrick Smith finished in second and third, respectively.

    Hanover Area picked up wins over Nanticoke Area and Wyoming Seminary, with Preston Zadzura leading the Hawkeyes. Wyoming Seminary defeated Nanticoke to wrap up the head-to-head meets.

    Cougars earn wins

    The Cougars didn’t have the top overall finisher, but put together a strong-enough performance as a team to beat Crestwood and MMI Prep to sweep their cluster meet.

    Crestwood’s Mason Staude was the top finisher with a time of 17:16, but Franklin Ritz and Owen Pollock finished in second and third, respectively, to help boost Hazleton Area.

    The Comets beat MMI in their head-to-head matchup to split the meet. MMI’s top finisher was Gavin Corchado, with a time of 29:18.

    Clean sweep for Patriots

    The Patriots had the top two individual finishers on a 3-0 day, picking up wins over Wilkes-Barre Area, Wyoming Area and Wyoming Valley West.

    Jakob Mead finished in 18:13 to take first place, with his teammate Caden Boettger a second behind him in second place.

    Wilkes-Barre Area finished the day 2-1, with Kaika Gonzalez finishing in fourth place to lead the Wolfpack. Wyoming Area finished 1-2, and Wyoming Valley West rounded out the cluster with an 0-3 record.

    GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

    Redeemer goes 3-0

    A strong, balanced team effort led Holy Redeemer to wins over Wyoming Seminary, Nanticoke Area and Hanover Area.

    Abby McGowan was the top finisher for the Royals, clocking in at 23:03 as the third-fastest female runner.

    Nanticoke Area finished 2-1 with wins over Sem and Hanover Area. Nevaeh Baran led the Trojans with a time of 22:23.

    Wyoming Seminary beat Hanover Area in their head-to-head meet, and the Blue Knights’ Grace Rushner was the fastest overall finisher in the individual competition with a time of 22:02.

    Crestwood cruises

    Katie Kozich and Kaelyn Barker took the top two individual spots as Crestwood defeated both Hazleton Area and MMI Prep to pick up two wins in Wednesday’s cluster.

    Hazleton Area finished 1-1 with a win over MMI Prep. Milana Daiute was the top finisher for the Cougars, coming in third place in the individual rankings.

    Mary Kate Kupsky finished sixth with a time of 22:28 to lead MMI Prep.

    Pittston Area leads way

    The Patriots picked up wins over Wyoming Area, Wilkes-Barre Area and Wyoming Valley West to sweep the meet. Wyoming Area finished at 2-1, Wilkes-Barre Area at 1-2 and Wyoming Valley West at 0-3.

    Olivea Scalese and Bella Dessoye finished first and second, respectively, in the individual standings for Pittston Area. Wyoming Area’s Hannah Stoss finished in third.

    Wilkes-Barre Area’s top finisher was Brianna Bean, coming in eighth place. For Valley West, Kali Piczon was the top finisher.
