WILKES-BARRE — PennDOT announced that the Carverton Road project will not start on Monday as planned due to a delay in the arrival of materials.

PennDOT announced last week that it will close Route 1036 — Carverton Road — between McDermott Lane and 8th Street in Kingston Township to perform an emergency pipe replacement.

Work was to begin this week and PennDOT targeted the end of September to reopen the road. When the project begins, the work will be weather-dependent and subject to change.

Main Street in Nanticoke to close beginning Monday

PennDOT announced that Main Street, between Market Street and North Walnut Street in Nanticoke, will be closed beginning Monday, Sept. 9, through Friday, Sept. 13, as part of the ongoing Nanticoke Streetscaping project.

PennDOT said there is a local detour utilizing Market Street and North Walnut Street.

Motorists should expect delays and take an alternate route if possible.

Lane restriction this week on I-81 northbound in Wilkes-Barre

PennDOT announced that there will be a lane restriction on Interstate 81 northbound in Wilkes-Barre at Exit 170B of the North Cross Valley Expressway/Wilkes-Barre to place a barrier at the exit ramp.

Work will take place on Monday, Sept. 9, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending at approximately 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The barrier will remain in place through the end of the year.

Motorists are asked to reduce speed and be alert in the work zone.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following local alerts on X.

Overnight closure scheduled for Northeast Extension of PA Turnpike on Sunday

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476) will be closed in both directions between the Wyoming Valley (Exit #115) and the Pocono (Exit #95) interchanges on Sunday, Sept. 8, and Monday, Sept. 9, from 12 a.m. until 5 a.m.

The closure is required for bridge work and is weather permitting.

If all the work is completed on Sunday morning, the second closure will not be required.

During the closure, traffic will be directed off the PA Turnpike and drivers can use the following suggested detours to get back on the PA Turnpike.

    Northbound Detour:

    • I-80 West 16.8 miles

    • I-81 North 23.6 miles

    • PA 315 North 0.3 miles

    • Re-enter at Wyoming Valley Interchange #115

    Southbound Detour:

    • PA 315 South 1.4 miles

    • I-81 South 23.7 miles

    • I-80 East 16.8 miles

    • Re-enter at Pocono Interchange #95

Pennsylvania State Police and PA Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on this closure.

Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.
