Passenger flow up 35.4% at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport

PITTSTON TWP. — The Bi-county Airport Board heard a report on Thursday that enplanements at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport were up 35.4% in August 2024, as compared to August 2023.

The airport administrative staff reported that the increase is mainly due to service to Charlotte, Philadelphia, Orlando and Myrtle Beach.

The report showed that in August 2024, five departing flights were cancelled — all for weather. This accounts for 534 (1.8/%) out of a total of 29,781 departure seats. Also, five arriving flights were canceled, all for weather.

In other business, the board:

• Awarded to a contract to Leeward Construction, Honesdale, for the Taxiway B Extension (Runway 4 Approach End)-Paving and Lighting Project. Total project cost is $6,691,500.

• Authorized the solicitation of bids for the Terminal Expansion Project.

• Appointed two employees to Maintenance 2 positions, pending confirmation of airport clearances and physicals: James Corridoni, Pittston; and Brandon Lucke, Dupont.

• Chris Dalessandro, Director of Finance, reported that year-to-date, the airport’s profit is $139,103, as compared to a loss in August 2023 of $527,501 — a difference of $666,604.

• Approved invoices received since the last meeting for supplies and services totaling $1,386,399.47. The invoices include major construction project costs of $995,995.02.
