Henderson County Public Schools are looking to reopen the week of Oct. 14. Only one school facility is out of commission due to Tropical Storm Helene. Atkinson Elementary in Hendersonville experienced flooding and needs new flooring, and it will take about two months before students can return to the building. In the meantime, students will be diverted to another facility, which officials will announce shortly. Athletic practices were allowed to resume this week."We were very, very fortunate with the schools and the facilities and the campuses compared to what could have happened," superintendent Mark R. Garrett said at a county commission meeting Monday night.  All of the school district's teachers and staff are accounted for, and school employees are calling families one by one to ask how they are and help fill needs they still have, such as water, food or fuel. Several schools served as sites for distribution of emergency supplies. "And our playgrounds are there to use, and our walking tracks are there to use if you need to. So please take advantage of those," Garrett said.Transylvania County Schools will also resume Monday, according to the school board's website. Extracurricular activities and athletics may resume this Thurs., Oct. 10. Polk County Schools Superintendent Aaron Greene told the Times-News that barring any unforseen issues, schools will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9th, with a two-hour delay, and regular schedule thereafter.  He said he was grateful for the local community as well as state and federal agencies and the National Guard, which all helped with recovery. "We still have a lot of work and healing to do, but the best place for our kids right now is in school."The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is expected to have details Wednesday regarding revised athletic schedules.
