The San Diego Padres defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 Tuesday, clinching their eighth consecutive series win.

The Padres started early, loading the bases in the first inning without getting a hit. Designated hitter Luis Arraez walked, left fielder Jurickson Profar was hit by a pitch and first baseman Jake Cronenworth reached on an error by Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz. Third baseman Manny Machado hit a sacrifice fly to score the game’s first run.

The Padres got another run in the fifth inning on a solo home run from right fielder David Peralta, and added an insurance run on an RBI single from Machado to go up 3-0 in the eighth inning.

San Diego’s pitching was stellar in the win, shutting out the Pirates and striking out 15 batters.

Starting right hander Michael King struck out 10, and while he allowed seven hits in his seven innings, he worked around the hits and didn’t allow a run.

San Diego’s two newly acquired relievers, right hander Jason Adam and left hander Tanner Scott, both struck out two in their two innings of work combined.

The Padres have not lost a series since before the All-Star break, and they remain in striking distance for the National League west division lead.
