A mild Labor Day weekend is expected to give way to a heatwave in parts of San Diego County later in the week, forecasters said Saturday.

Downtown San Diego had a high near 78 degrees Saturday accompanied by light gusts, with mostly sunny conditions.

Coastal San Diego will see mostly sunny skies throughout next week, with some patchy fog in the morning and highs in the upper 70s, according to the National Weather Service.

The deserts, though, will see triple-digit highs throughout the week, while the valleys will see mostly clear conditions with highs in the upper 80s. The mountains will see clear conditions and light wind, with highs reaching the low 90s.

“Temperatures will be warming each day into next week, with a more significant warm-up in store for mid-to-late week, (including) coastal areas,” the NWS’ San Diego office posted Saturday on X.

The warmest days, according to the service, will likely be Thursday and Friday, with high 90s to low 100s expected inland and in the valleys.

Sunday’s San Diego surf forecast includes a low-risk rip current, with surf height from 1 to 3 feet, water temperature 62 to 74 degrees and a mixed south swell from 210 degrees and west swell from 280 degrees.

“The marine layer is expected to become shallower into next week, becoming patchier and more confined to the coast,” the NWS said.

No hazardous marine conditions are expected through at least Thursday.
