A heat wave continued Saturday in parts of San Diego County, although forecasters were also calling for a chance of showers and thunderstorms from the valleys to the deserts Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

A heat advisory will remain in effect until at least 8 p.m. Monday for the cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Chula Vista, Vista, Oceanside, San Diego and National City.

High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s to 90s near the coast and close to triple-digits a few miles inland, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials advised the public to protect themselves from the heat by drinking plenty of fluids, staying out of the sun during the hottest times of the day, taking shelter in air-conditioned spaces and checking up on at-risk relatives and neighbors.

Valley areas are expected to be mostly sunny, with triple-digit weather until at least Monday. Conditions will slowly calm down, with highs sinking into the upper 70s to lower 80s throughout the week. Mountain areas will also experience extreme heat, with more bearable weather expected by Wednesday.

Downtown San Diego was expected to be mostly sunny on Saturday, with a high near 91 and a low around 73.

Sunday’s San Diego surf forecast includes a low-risk rip current, with surf height from 1 to 3 feet, and a mixed south swell from 210 degrees and west swell from 280 degrees.

“Main impacts from any storms that develop will be locally heavy rain, erratic gusty winds, and frequent lightning,” the NWS said. “A trough is expected to move into the western states by the middle of the week, leading to a quick cooling trend with drier weather.”

No hazardous marine weather conditions are expected with predominantly northwest flow through Wednesday.
