The House of Representatives passed the Building Chips in America Act Monday, designed to bring microchip manufacturing back to America while maintaining environmental protections for clean air and water.

The bill was led by Rep. Scott Peters (D-San Diego), whose district includes the northeastern region of the county, and and Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia).

Now heading to the President’s desk, the legislation will speed up microchip projects supported by the CHIPS and Science Act.

Companies in the semiconductor supply chain plan to invest billions in new domestic manufacturing projects, but these projects require additional environmental analysis under National Environmental Policy Act, even if they’ve already received permits and begun construction.

The Chips Act aims to streamline federal reviews for these projects, ensuring timely approval and granting the Secretary of Commerce more tools to expedite the process, according to Peters’ office.

“I look forward to celebrating when the President signs this historic bipartisan legislation to supercharge domestic chip manufacturing,” Peters said.
