National City’s Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego and Cox have announced a $25,000 technology upgrade to the Cox Innovation Lab, which is located inside the club.

The $25,000 contributed to 22 new computer stations, including tables and chairs, a 3D printer and pens, and three DoodlePads and activity tables.

The upgrade, which was made possible by a grant from Cox Communications, allows students in the after-school program to better complete their homework and gain STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to dream big,” Chanelle Hawken, Cox Communications West Region vice president of government and public affairs, said in a release. “Cox remains committed to providing resources … to help build a better future for the next generation.”

Cox labs provide tools, technology and efficient internet that aid students in receiving help with homework, research, employment and college preparation, according to Cox.

“We’re so thankful to Cox Communications … (this) will give our National City youth the opportunity to increase their digital literacy, have access to technology when they’re away from the classroom and reach their full potential,” Danny Sherlock, Boys & Girls Club president and chief executive officer, said in a release.

Malcolm Mitchell, 2017 Patriots Superbowl champion, children’s author, and Cox’s national equity spokesperson, helped with the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the upgrade. He also read his new book, “A World Within Reach,” to the young club members.

Cox and the Club will soon announce an interactive campaign to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the labs in National City, according to Cox.

Since 2003, Cox and the Boys & Girls Club have partnered to set up youth for successful futures, according to their website.
