Seniors and juniors usually highlight varsity rosters and starting roles, but several area sophomores are expected to make instant impacts this season.

Here's a look at seven who are expected to contribute for their respective squads.

More: There are plenty of talented juniors so here's our look at the best in the area

    7. Tyce Whiteman, Sheridan

The quarterback battle remains open, and Whiteman is making his case with his strong arm. Replacing All-Ohioan Caden Sheridan won't be easy, but Whiteman and junior Logan Hupp should give the Generals options as they replace eight starters on offense.

    6. Trio Ladd, Zanesville

Ladd will anchor a young defense at linebacker for the Blue Devils. His athleticism will be a major asset for a defense relying on numerous underclassmen.

    5. Logan Wince, Coshocton

The speedster showed off his wheels during track season, and he will likely be the main back for the Redskins this season. He gained valuable experience last year, and his quickness should lead to some big plays for an offense looking for its next set of playmakers.

    4. Lane Taylor, Tri-Valley

The Scotties are senior-laden, but the sophomore center returns after starting last year. His development has been noticed by the coaches, and his willingness to learn and work helps solidify the offensive line.

    3. Tyson Spicer, New Lexington

His athleticism will bring another element to both sides of the ball for the Panthers. He is expected to have a larger role in the offense, but can also aid a secondary filled with speed and experience.

    2. Brayson Hill, Crooksville

Hill made a big splash on the scene, helping the Ceramics win their first three games last season. He can provide big runs on the ground, but the development of his arm will determine if Crooksville can take that next step.

    1. Carter Smith, West Muskingum

Smith showed glimpses of his talent last season and should become the primary receiver for the Tornadoes. He has the ability to catch the ball in traffic and make plays in space. His play-making ability should also open opportunities as West M adds new faces to the offense.

Others to watch: Logan Russell, Sheridan; Maddox Mohler, Zanesville; Carter Hennessey, Zanesville; Cooper McKenzie, West Muskingum; Mike Reese, Zanesville.
