Week 1 Roundup: John Glenn, Tri-Valley among the big winners

Week 1 of the high school football season has arrived, and there's a full slate of season openers set for Friday, Aug. 23.

Week 1 scores

John Glenn 42, Maysville 0: Andrew Glaub had a pair of short scoring runs and Owen Edwards threw for a score and ran for another, as the Muskies routed the Panthers.

Edwards found Jake Johnson for a 32-yard TD to open the scoring then Johnson hit Ryder Pennington for a 35-yard score for a 14-0 lead through one.

Glaub had a pair of 2-yard scoring runs and Edwards scored from six yards out in the second for a 35-0 lead, while Lincoln Gilcher scored from two yards out in the fourth. Will Nicolozakes made all six extra points.

Gilcher had 108 yards on 15 carries, Johnson made four catches for 50 yards and Edwards had 73 yards passing and 25 rushing for John Glenn, which owned a 301-59 advantage in total yards. Kole Robinson also grabbed two interceptions for the Muskie defense.

Tri-Valley 43, Meadowbrook 12: A big second half fueled the Scotties, who got four touchdown passes from Max Lyall in an MVL crossover win at Jack Anderson Stadium.

Playing without star running back Jayden Wallace, who sat out with a lower body injury, the Scotties leaned on Lyall's 14-of-20 passing for 230 yards. Two were fourth-quarter touchdown strikes to Ryan Lamonica (57 yards) and Keaton Hahn (6 yards), respectively, as they opened up a 21-12 lead at halftime.

Lamonica finished with 121 yards receiving on five catches, while Kade Hindel hauled in 67 yards on two catches and tossed a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Tri-Valley, down 7-6 after the first quarter, led 28-12 entering the fourth.

Meadowbrook quarterback Justice Huey, a three-year starter, was 41-of-55 passing for 382 yards — top target Nick Norman hauled in 14 catches for 105 markers — but the Colts managed minus-1 yard on 22 carries rushing.

Leevi Wade carried 16 times for 59 yards and Lyall added 41 yards on six tries.

New Lexington 49, Fairfield Union 7: The veteran Panthers took their opening drive for a touchdown and never looked back in a blowout nonleague win on the road.

Isaiah Stephens tossed three TDs to Bentley Hanson in the first half alone — as New Lex had leads of 14-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime to force a running clock in the second half. Carson Kellogg also had a 5-yard scoring run and a 58-yard scoring strike to Tyson Spicer.

Stephens also connected with Talon Schwendeman for a 50-yard pass in the third, and Spicer returned a fumble for a score in the second half.

Stephens went 13-of-17 for 273 yards and four TDs, Kellogg had 74 total yards and Hanson hauled in four passes for 175 yards for the Panthers, who held a 394-131 advantage in total yards.

Rosecrans 46, Beallsville 0: The balanced Bishops ran for 194 yards and passed for 193 in a convincing road win against the Blue Devils.

Brody Zemba caught a 44-yard touchdown and ran for a 70-yard score in the first quarter as Rosecrans built a 23-0 lead after a quarter. Zemba added a 70-yard scoring catch in the second half, as Hayden Perdue finished 6-of-7 passing for 148 yards and four scores.

Zemba had 126 yards rushing and 114 receiving.

Beallsville managed only four total yards. Cooper Briggs recorded a safety for Rosecrans.

Athens 28, Philo 14: The Bulldogs used a 14-point fourth quarter to top the Electrics, as they totaled 420 yards to Philo's 156.

Talon Preston's 6-yard TD put Philo up 7-0 early, but Braedon Young scored from 1 yard out to tie it at 7 after one quarter. After Jack Lincicome ran in from two yards out to put Philo up again, Alex Pero's 2-yard scoring run helped Athens tie it at 14 at the break.

Neither team scored in the third, but Young found Leo Martin for a 39-yard score to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Pero's 16-yard TD run with 1:38 remaining sealed the victory.

Philo missed on all eight of its passing attempts, while Preston ran for 112 yards on 27 carries. Talan Bailey added 32 yards on six rushes and Jack Lincicome had 12 yards on three carries for the Electric offense.

Young completed 12 of 15 passes for 171 yards and Pero had 33 carries for 225 yards for Athens.

West Muskingum 42, Lakewood 0: Carter Winland had three rushing touchdowns and Jake Anton found Carter Smith for a pair of TDs through the air in the Tornadoes' victory.

Anton found Smith on a 56-yard TD in the first quarter to start the scoring, while Winland scored from five yards out and Wes Houston added a 4-yard TD run in the second for a 21-0 lead, as Silas Kuhn made all six extra points.

Winland added scoring runs of 15 yards and 1 yard and Smith hauled in a 24-yard scoring strike from Anton in the third.

Winland finished with 128 yards on 17 carries, Anton was 13-of-19 for 197 yards and Smith caught five passes for 113 yards as West M outgained Lakewood 402-91.

Marietta 13, Morgan 12: Haiden Pauley threw a pair of touchdowns to Tavian Myers, but the Raiders failed to convert the two-point conversion twice in the loss to the Tigers.

Seth Britton had a 5-yard TD with 57 seconds left in the second quarter to put Marietta up, but Pauley found Myers from 30 yards out as time expired to make it 7-6 at the half.

Myers hauled in a 25-yard scoring strike from Pauley in the third for a 12-6 lead, but Drew Warden found Will Tornes from six yards out to put the Tigers ahead for good at the 9:42 mark of the fourth.

Marietta ran for 240 yards, highlighted by Britton's 140 yards on 20 totes, while Pauley went 13-of-19 for 159 yards, Hayden Bankes had a team-high five receptions for 57 yards and Tanner Bankes ran for 47 yards on 16 carries to pace the Morgan attack.

Indian Creek 41, Cambridge 13: The Braves led 35-0 through three quarters before the Bobcats got on the board in the fourth.

AJ Lawrence threw a 24-yard TD pass to Marshall Laishley and Tate Sikora ran 46 yards for a score in the final quarter for Cambridge, which was outgained 351-197 and had only nine first downs to 18 by Creek.

Sikora had 72 yards on two carries, Lawrence was 2-of-4 for 39 yards and ran for 35 yards on four carries and Michael Micale went 3-of-9 for 26 yards to lead Cambridge.

Buckeye Trail 21, Caldwell 19: Drew McGlumphy ran 31 yards for the go-ahead TD and Jace Hickman's two-point run helped the Warriors fend off Caldwell after leading 13-0 at the half.

Sammy Brown caught a 24-yard TD and Travis Dodd scored from a yard out in the second quarter to give Trail the lead.

McGlumphy had 127 yards on 23 carries and went 12-of-17 for 107 yards with a TD and an interception, Dodd finished with 64 yards on 16 carries, Mason Todd had five catches for 21 yards and Brown hauled in four passes for 55 yards to lead the Trail offense.

Garaway 56, River View 0: The Pirates shut out the Black Bears to open the season.
