You're invited to weigh in on the forthcoming demolition of one of Olympia's most dangerous buildings, the Washington Department of Enterprise Services announced on Monday.

Since 2018, the General Administration Building has sat empty, DES reports. The six-story building is not up to code and poses human health hazards from lead to asbestos, according to the department.

Rather than renovating it, the state has opted to demolish and replace it with a restroom and parking lot for some 300 vehicles, the DES reports further.

Last year, the Legislature put up $4.3 million to destroy the derelict building, though more money will be needed down the line, according to the department.

Its demolition is not anticipated to have negative environmental impacts, but people offer their two cents' worth anyway through Sep. 11 per the State Environmental Policy Act, the DES reports.

DES invites members of the public to submit comments on the SEPA checklist and Threshold determination of non-significance.

Interested parties can comment by emailing DESSEPA@des.wa.gov or mailing the Department of Enterprise Services, General Administration Building SEPA Checklist, Attn: John Lyons, 1500 Jefferson St. SE, Suite 3050, Olympia, WA 98504

It will be good to see it gone. It is not beautiful, historic, or architecturally significant. The question will be what will replace it. That is where we have an opportunity to do something better.

Finally, that sick building needs to go.
