Baton Rouge's new hockey team announces their 2023 schedule

Hockey fans in Baton Rouge get excited! The 2023 schedule for the first season of Baton Rouge's new professional hockey has finally been released.

The still unnamed team will open its season at the Raising Cane's River Center on Thursday, October 26th against the Columbus River Dragons. That game will be the first of 28 home games that the team will play at the River Center in Baton Rouge throughout the season. 

The regular season consists of 58 games total and will run from October 26th until the season finale on Saturday, April 13th against the Mississippi Sea Wolves. 

This is not the first time that Baton Rouge has had hockey team. The Baton Rouge Kingfish played in Baton Rouge from 1996 to 2003 as a member of the ECHL until they relocated to British Columbia in 2003. The city previously held 3 exhibition hockey games in December 2022 and January 2023 to gauge the public's interest in hockey games, which was a success. During those 3 exhibition games, over 20,000 people attended. Just a few months later, the Federal Prospects Hockey League and the city of Baton Rouge and agreed on a 3-year deal for the new hockey team to play in Baton Rouge at the Raising Cane’s River Center.

The team held a contest earlier this year to take suggestions to determine their new name. On May 27th, they announced on their Facebook page that they narrowed a new name down to 3 choices and they will be officially making an announcement of the new name soon once they iron out some final touches.
