Injury bug hits the Saints on Day 2 of training camp

    2023-07-29

The New Orleans Saints opened their 2023 training camp on yesterday with both 100% attendance and participation due to no injuries but unfortunately that did not last long. News came out of today's training camp practice that Saints OT Trevor Penning is dealing what was call a "minor" foot injury.

Penning, who is his 2nd year with the team was not seen at practice today. Saints head coach Dennis Allen said that Penning is "day to day" and his injury is something that they will monitor and “not related to his previous surgery."

Penning was selected in the first round (19th overall) by the Saints in the 2022 NFL draft. He started last season dealing with severe case of turf toe that required him to have surgery and was placed on injured reserve in September. After rehabbing hard, he was able to come back in November, only to end his season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his other foot.

Since Penning was drafted, the expectation was that he would eventually take over the starting position from James Hurst. Unfortunately, after 2 setbacks last season and now with this new injury, even one that is said to be minor, it is not a positive sign to have been bitten by the injury bug 3 times in one year. The 6'7" tackle has so much potential to really be a force to reckon with on the Saints offensive line. Hopefully this injury is nothing concerning and that the third time is really a charm, so we won't have to see Penning's name on the injury report again in the future.
