A new tropical disturbance could be headed into the Gulf of Mexico next week

    2023-08-24

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of moisture that is currently sitting over Central America could have the possibility of tropical development in the coming days. The NHC gives the disturbance a 50% chance of development into a tropical system as it moves northward to the Caribbean into the Gulf over the next seven days. The next named storm will be called Idalia.

With this disturbance being a few days out, the steering currents into the Gulf are still uncertain. By Saturday, it is expected to be sitting near the Yucatan Peninsula, so we should know a little bit more on where it could be headed then.

The Gulf of Mexico has been quiet so far this Hurricane season but this looks to be something that everyone from Louisiana to Florida will need watch closely.
