South Carolina defeats Iowa to win NCAA Women's Basketball Championship

    2024-04-08

On Sunday, the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 87-75, to win the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, giving them the perfect end to a perfect season. South Carolina finished their season with a 38-0 record, becoming the 10th undefeated team in women's basketball history to have a perfect season.

The win is South Carolina's third national title and their second in the last three seasons. All this comes after coach Dawn Staley lost five starters from last year's squad. In the past three seasons, Staley has helped South Carolina earn a 109-3 record.

A very emotional Staley said through tears after the game, "We serve an unbelievable God. I’m so proud, so proud.”

Staley continued, “I am so incredibly happy for our players. It doesn’t always end like you want it to end, much like last year. I’m just super proud of where I work, I’m super proud of our fans. It’s awesome. It’s unbelievable.”
