Amtrak service from New Orleans to Mobile could return by Super Bowl

Thanks to a new agreement reached between the city of Mobile and Amtrak, Passenger rail service could return to the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Mobile as early as next year.

The city and Amtrak have finalized the language for a funding agreement and a ground lease to pave the way for a train stop in downtown Mobile. A majority of the Mobile City Council had opposed the deal earlier this year over concerns on the cost, but is expected to officially approve the agreement next week.

The train service would run twice a day in each direction between the Union Passenger Terminal in downtown New Orleans and the new terminal in downtown Mobile, with stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula, MS.

Knox Ross, Chairman of the Southern Rail Commission said, “We are very excited about this. We’ve been working on this for a long time. It’s time to get something up and running.”

Knox added, "Ideally, we'd like to have it up and running in time for the Super Bowl. We think it's doable."

New Orleans will host Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9th, 2025, in Caesars Superdome.
