Watching the tropics: Tropical wave in the Atlantic gaining development potential

    2024-07-31

Forecasters are currently tracking a tropical wave in the north Atlantic Ocean that is expected to develop into a depression later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center, who says that there is a 60% chance of development within the next week.

The system, which was first spotted on Friday afternoon, is currently east of the Leeward Islands and could become a tropical depression or tropical storm near the Bahamas.

Depending on if the system can organize quickly, it could strengthen into a tropical storm and move into Florida or up the eastern coast of the United States. If it stays on the weaker side, it could move into the Gulf of Mexico.

The next named storm will be called Debby. In what has been a quiet season for the Gulf Coast so far, this is one that we will need to keep an eye on.
