Charbroiled Oysters: A Delicious Recipe for National Oyster Day

Did you know that National Oyster Day was August 5th? Yes, oysters have their own day, which is pretty cool because they are a huge part of New Orleans cuisine. The urban legend is that the best time to eat them is in the months ending in "R," but in actuality, oysters can be eaten year-round because of increased food safety handling, more monitoring and accountability for oyster farmers, plus the fact that most oysters are now farmed instead of wild-caught. To celebrate National Oyster Day, I am sharing this amazing recipe for chargrilled oysters, which were first made infamous by Drago's Restaurant in New Orleans, but with this easy recipe, you can make them at home anytime.

    INGREDIENTS:

    • 1-1/2 sticks of butter
    • 2 dozen of fresh oysters, shucked
    • 1 tablespoon of chopped garlic
    • 1/4 cup of hot sauce

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. Mix the butter, garlic, hot sauce, oregano and pepper together in a bowl.
    2. Heat the grill to medium-high.
    3. Put the oysters on grill grates and generously spoon the butter mixture into the oysters.
    4. Grill the oysters about 5 minutes, until the sides begin to curl up.
    5. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and parsley mix.
    6. Cook for about a minute more until cheese melts.
    7. Remove oysters from the grill, serve with French bread and enjoy!
