The first thing to know about the house at 1905 Garling Drive in Bloomington is that you cannot miss it. Tucked within a nondescript neighborhood of mid-century ranch homes is the house Tom Kirk built. It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.

Parks director addresses district’s cleanup priorities
Last week’s tornadoes caused massive damage in three of the Kewanee Park District’s parks, and the recovery effort might not be finished until the end of next month. The park board met Wednesday; the meeting had been postponed from the scheduled date of last Thursday in the wake of the July 15 tornadoes which devastated Windmont, Baker and Chautauqua parks.
