New York state police recruit tried taking training officer’s loaded gun, officials said
Cazenovia, N.Y. — A recruit for the New York State Police was charged after trying to take a training officer’s loaded gun last week. The recruit, Jose L. Valeriano, 22, was meeting around 10 p.m. last Tuesday, July 23, with Trooper Cory Sprague when he started acting “erratically” and lunged for Sprague’s gun, according to Beau Duffy, a state police spokesperson.

Ulster County fire chief suspended then arrested
PLATTEKILL – The Plattekill Fire District Chief was suspended by the district commissioners at an emergency meeting of the board on July 18, following several personnel-related” complaints. The commissioners ordered Chief Robert Betanzos Jr. to return the district-owned chief’s vehicle to the district while the suspension is served. Betanzos, according to a Mid Hudson News source close to the investigation, says the suspended chief hid the district-owned vehicle in the garage of his private residence in Gardiner.

On Aug. 9, the White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut will continue their speaker series with a celebration of Eric Schnall’s debut novel, “I Make Envy on Your Disco.”. Just released in May, Schnall’s novel has already earned praise for its poignant observations and lyrical prose. “Disco” is the second winner of the Barbara DiBernard Prize in Fiction, an annual prize for books published by Zero Street Fiction, part of University of Nebraska Press, committed to LGBTQ+ literary writers with commercial potential. “They publish books very successfully and thoughtfully,” said Schnall. “It’s been a balance to embrace the box while not wanting the box to be exclusive, if that makes sense,” he added in reference to his novel being labeled or branded as a “gay” book. “I’m getting incredible notes from people,” said Schnall.

Joseph Donat starts as new city administrator for Poughkeepsie
Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers recently tapped Joseph Donat to be the city’s new administrator. Donat previously worked as the deputy chief of staff for former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney in the 18th District, and as the city manager of Newburgh, New York. Most recently, Donat was Poughkeepsie’s Interim Development Director.
