A man was taken into custody overnight in Waukesha after a standoff that started when the suspect told police he killed his grandmother and was threatening to hurt himself, according to the Waukesha Police Department.

The City of Waukesha Communications Center received multiple calls at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday for "what sounded like multiple gunshots" at a home in the 200 block of Douglas Ave. Dispatchers made contact with a man who police say admitted he shot and killed his grandmother and was threatening to hurt himself.

Police were able to use drone technology to confirm that a woman inside the home appeared to be dead. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to de-escalate the situation, the Waukesha Police Tactical Unit used "chemical munitions" to attempt to force the man to leave the home. Eventually, a K9 was sent in and helped to apprehend the man, police say.

"This is a tragic event for the community, and our thoughts are with the victim's family during this difficult time," police said in a news release.

The police department has begun an investigation into the incident.
