Annual Point in Time Count Reveals Significant Decrease in Homelessness in Newport News
Each year, The Greater Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Consortium (GVPHC) and partner agencies conduct a Point in Time (PIT) Count in Newport News and surrounding localities during the same 24-hour period in January to estimate the number of people experiencing homelessness. This year’s count on January 25, 2024, revealed 412 individuals experiencing homelessness, a 14% decrease from the 2023 count of 480. Of these, 83% were in temporary emergency shelters.

Williamsburg Health Foundation awards $3.9 million in grants
The Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) has announced 21 grants totaling $3.9 million to nonprofits in Virginia’s tidewater area. The grants were awarded in the areas of behavioral health services, healthy aging, healthy eating active living, integrated care, and two-generation family services to address the most pressing health-related needs of communities in the City of Williamsburg as well as York and James City counties. Recipients include the Virginia Health Care Foundation, which was awarded $50,000 to fund the accelerated licensure of behavioral health counselors and a licensed social worker as part of its initiative to address the area’s mental health workforce shortage.
