King Of The River Contest Goes Into Extra Innings
A rainout for the Peninsula Oilers last Saturday means the 2nd Annual King of the River Food Drive competition is getting some extra time this year. The contest, pitting the cities of Kenai and Soldotna against one another in a bid to see which can bring more food to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, will now conclude on July 26.

Kenai River Personal Use Dip Net Fishery Open 24 Hours Per Day
The Kenai River personal use dip net fishery will be open 24 hours per day, beginning 11:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The area of the Kenai River open to personal use dipnetting remains the same. Please review page 81 of the 2024 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet for a complete description of the area open to dipnetting, along with harvest limits and permit requirements. Participants are reminded that retention of king salmon is prohibited, and any king salmon caught must be returned immediately to the water.
Arctic air brings historically cold July temperatures to Bethel
The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta isn’t known for its scorching summer temperatures, but a few days this July have been especially chilly. Over the weekend, high temperatures recorded at the Bethel Airport on both Saturday and Sunday were in the 40s. That’s around 15 degrees below normal; the normal high temperature in Bethel at this time of year is 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

Soldotna, borough back Kenai pursuit of Seattle air service
Support is building for the City of Kenai’s pursuit of direct airline service between Kenai Municipal Airport and Seattle. It’s been less than a month since the Kenai City Council was briefed on a recent study of air traffic in and out of the city. That study, conducted by Volaire Aviation, found nearly all people flying from Kenai to Anchorage travel to a second destination. For most travelers, that destination is Seattle.

Nikic earns Academic All-American honors
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Leon Nikic from the University of Alaska Anchorage earned Academic All-American At-Large honors from the College Sports Communicators. Nikic enjoyed a stand-out season on the slopes earning All-American honors with a ninth-place finish in the giant slalom and an 11th-place finish in the slalom at the NCAA National Championships. The native of Tux, Austria was named the RMISA Giant Slalom MVP after posting eight top-10 finishes, including four podium finishes. He has a 3.77 GPA in psychology.
