Seared steps to the fore in steakhouse scene
Toledo has its share of decent steakhouses — where a premium price promises to satisfy our inner carnivores the way no other dining experience can. Now Seared in northwest Toledo is one of the latest to enter the arena, opening in 2023 in a little building just west of Secor Road on Alexis Road. And while we can say we were impressed with the restaurant’s focused menu and great side offerings, during one unfortunate visit, they failed to deliver on the prime directive. In all, our trips to Seared were quite positive. We loved the puffy loaf of bread served complimentary to the meal — delicious and a welcome addition. We loved the creative and surprisingly balanced appetizers and sides. And on one visit at least, we loved the buttery, marinated, perfectly cooked-as-ordered strip steak. In our first visit, however, that wasn’t the case. One of our steaks, ordered medium-well, came very rare. So the server offered to have it cooked more, only for it to return still bright red and rare. On the third try, it came well-done in a to-go box. The server was patient and apologetic, and the steak was ultimately comped. Oh well.
Toledo 'Carpenters' ring in release of 'Short n' Sweet'
Local fans of singer-songwriter and pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, or “Carpenters,” would “Please Please Please” like her latest album to be less Short n’ Sweet. Culture Clash Records, located at 912 Monroe St. in downtown Toledo, hosted a listening party Thursday for the new Sabrina Carpenter album, Short n’ Sweet, which lives up to its name at 36 minutes in length. The event was complete with free Short n’ Sweet-branded journals, temporary tattoos, a contest for a special edition CD, and a video introduction from Carpenter herself. The event was reminiscent of Carpenter’s sudden rise in popularity after making music for more than 10 years, filled with new fans and yearslong stans. Carpenter released her first single, “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying,” in March, 2014, but many were unaware of her music until recently. An employee running the event even mistakenly referred to her last album, emails i can’t send, as her first (the 2022 record was her fifth studio album).

BCAN to premiere new health and wellness show
The host of a new show on Buckeye Community Arts Network wants Toledo to start thinking about the idea of wellness in all aspects of life. “When people think wellness, they’re like, ‘Oh, like yoga ... sitting around, meditating, thinking about the goodness that is life,’ which is amazing and is totally what the show is about, but we also went to look at all encompassing wellness and really ask the burning question of ‘How is our community actively, living, breathing, and being well and how are they promoting wellness for others?’” said Toi Creel, a producer and host for BCAN. Ms. Creel and the network are looking to answer that question in its newest TV show Be Well, which will see her discuss wellness in a holistic sense with each episode — topics like environmental wellness, mental wellness, physical wellness, financial wellness, and community wellness. The show’s first episode, airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on the Health Network, will feature interviews from residents who specialize in different aspects of health. They included Matt Killam, chief outreach officer for Metroparks Toledo, and Isabella Weik, president and chief executive officer of the Toledo Mindfulness Institute.
