The bond between a mama Orangutan and her baby is one of the strongest in nature. This week, The Toledo Zoo announced the birth of a baby Bornean Orangutan born June 21 and he's too sweet!

On July 4, 2024, zoo staff shared details about the newest member of the Kingdom of the Apes exhibit, Akyli (which means "unique")! Watch to see the precious baby boy and his proud mama below!

It’s a boy! (We’re sure this time😉) Akyli, meaning “unique”, was born on June 21 to parents Yasmin and Boomer. The baby Bornean orangutan is on exhibit with his family during Zoo hours in the Kingdom of the Apes. Please note that the animals have access to indoor enclosures and may choose to venture off exhibit. "Say hello to the newest member of our Orangutan family!" the video says. The clip opens with happy mama Yasmin holding her wide-eyed new son. She showers the baby boy with all the love and kisses she can give while he happily takes it all in. The following montage shows the two in different places and positions at the zoo as the baby quickly learns to stay close to mom.

"It’s a boy! (We’re sure this time) Akyli, meaning “unique”, was born on June 21 to parents Yasmin and Boomer," the captions says. "The baby Bornean orangutan is on exhibit with his family during Zoo hours in the Kingdom of the Apes."

Not shown is father Boomer who, the zoo said, is spending time in the outdoor exhibit so mom and baby can bond . They'll reunite at some point in the near future and we're sure it'll be a heartwarming reunion.

"Congrats mama, and welcome to the world lil guy," one person wrote. "She’s a good mommy, bless her heart," another said. "Wow. Welcome to this crazy world kiddo. May you & your family have long, healthy & happy lives together," another added.

This is one announcement we love! Congratulations to the Orangutan family!

    Facts About Orangutans As Mothers

Many mammals tend to stay pretty close to their mothers as infants but baby Orangutans attach to mamas until around 7 years old. They'll ride on mom's back when traveling, and sleep with them in their nests to stay safe. This time is critical so the baby's learn how to hunt and gather and how to use tools to build their nests to survive in the wild.

And, because Orangutans can live up to 60 years, their familial bonds remain close throughout their lives. The Toledo Zoo's Kingdom of the Apes exhibit will showcase little Akyli as he grows and learns to thrive with his parents at his side.

What an exciting time for all! Welcome to the world, sweet Akyli!
