Don't be scared if you hear a sonic boom coming from the skies over southeast Michigan this afternoon.

That's the message from the Ohio National Guard's 180th Fighter Wing. In a Facebook post Monday, the military base warned that it would conduct a functional flight check sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

A sonic boom is a loud explosive noise caused by the shock wave from an aircraft traveling faster than the speed of sound.

The actual flight will take place over the Bowling Green and Toledo areas in Ohio, but residents in southeast Michigan could hear the noise, too.

The post says, in part: "A functional check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance on the aircraft, putting the aircraft through strenuous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems of the aircraft function properly and ensuring mission readiness, before putting the aircraft back into operational rotation."

The flight check could be canceled due to weather, if necessary.
