The Toledo Zoo has updated their fans and visitors on their not-so-little baby Elephant and gave us a new look at how quickly she's grown.
On July 13, 2024, the TikTok account for The Toledo Zoo (@ thetoledozoo ) shared a video and update on Kirkja, a sweet Elephant who is growing so quickly. Take a look!
In a 27-second video, we meet back up with a baby Elephant named Kirkja , born on February 17, 2024. she's a lot bigger than she was five months ago, and the scale is proof.

"We have some exciting news to share," the video text reads. "Born at around 250 lbs... " the text continues as we see the cute Elephant step onto the scales.
"Kirkja has now doubled in weight," the video shares, showing that she now weighs 501 lbs.
While she's now double in size and walks around next to her mom, it's clear she still has a whole lot more growing to do because the incredible height difference tells you she's just a little calf.
"Kirkja is doubling in size and cuteness!" the video's caption explained. "Weigh to go, girl!"
In the comments people cheered on the growing Elephant and how well she is doing.
"My brain can't wrap about the fact that is 500 lbs of baby," shared another.
"I had the chance to see her in early June," someone else added. "She is adorable."
"They are the sweetest," wrote someone else.
"Getting big and strong," added another viewer.
"She is so precious!" shared someone else. "I want to pet her lil’ noodle nose."
"You go, baby girl!!" another person wrote.
"Elephants are the best," shared another. "We have to save them."
In May, the Toledo Zoo announced that the baby elephant born in February was actually a girl and not a boy as they had originally thought.
"Toledo Zoo staff said that while they were closely monitoring the elephant calf, they discovered that she was a girl - a mistake they say is quite common within the elephant community," 13 ABC News wrote.
"The zoo also announced that Kirkja is expected to stay with the zoo for a very long time, as female elephants can remain in their units longer than males who would need to find a new herd."
Facts About Baby Elephants
According to Kapama Private Game Reserve , baby Elephants can be really weird, and that's because they're learning, similar to our toddlers.
"Baby elephants are often found doing strange things like sticking their trunks into the mouths of older relatives. Trying to pick up things and eating the dung of other elephants," the reserve shares. "Now a lot of this may seem odd but there is all good reason for this. Young elephants still need to learn the way of the bush. All these things contribute to that."
Baby Elephants, like Kirkja, can weigh more than 200 lbs at birth, and that's because they're gestating for 22 months. Yes, almost two years. These babies are covered in hair which they start losing over time, and the hairs are there to help cool their body down. And these babies are the babies of the whole herd, if a baby is crying or upset, all the Elephants respond to go and help sooth whatever is making them sad.
"All in all, they are wonders of the bush and always a pleasure to see," Kapama shares. "Fun interactive and amazingly beautiful. These interesting, intelligent creatures will always be near to my heart."
