San Antonio temporarily houses migrants at the Migrant Resource Center at 7000 San Pedro Ave. Recently, hundreds of migrants were seen sleeping outside of the resource center as it was full.

Recent news came out that the city was housing migrants near the airport. City Council said it was several days while the city manager said it was 24 hours or less as they waited for transportation leaving the city.

City Manager Erik Walsh said according to KSAT:

I don’t think it was a big secret. And frankly, I’m offended at the at the notion that this was a secret or we were hiding individuals. That’s offensive. That’s not our job. And it’s almost ridiculous.”
“The fact of the matter is that there’s 1,200 people on average showing up in San Antonio, or coming through San Antonio, on a daily basis. And if anybody’s got any questions about immigration, they ought to call their congressman or the federal government.”

Councilman Mark Whyte whose district includes the airport said:

“But what we since learned, of course, is that some of these folks are staying at this holding facility for two, three days or more.”

About half of the council members were aware of what was happening with migrants staying at the facility near the airport.

According to News 4 San Antonio, it costs the city $240,000 a month to house the migrants at the Airport Transfer Center. This only began on November 6 according to City officials.

Whyte said according to News 4 it was costing taxpayers money:

“We need to send the message to the border and to the migrant network that folks cannot continue to come here because there is nowhere to put them."

The City was waiting for $3 million to be reimbursed from the federal government.

What do you think about this situation?
