Texas Flies Migrants to Chicago: Mayor Says City Targeted

Chicago was getting frustrated with buses arriving with migrants who were dropped off in the City. The City passed legislation to fine buses up to $3,000 and also to impound these buses. To get around this, Texas flew its first plane of migrants to Chicago on Tuesday evening.

On December 19, a chartered plane flew into O’Hara International Airport around 7:19 pm carrying 120 migrants.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said on WTTW News:

“Chicago has been targeted.”

On Wednesday, Governor Abbott tweeted a video of migrants who were boarding the plane to fly to Chicago.

He said on X, which is formerly Twitter:

Sanctuary city Chicago started obstructing and targeting our busing mission.

Texas will now expand our operation to include flights to Chicago.

Until Biden steps up to secure the border, we will continue to provide overwhelmed Texas border towns with much-needed relief.

According to his post on X, Governor Abbott has bussed over 82,900 migrants to sanctuary cities and 24,500 to Chicago since he started this operation in the spring of 2022. Initially, he bussed migrants to Washington, D.C. to show President Joe Biden what Texas was dealing with.

Governor Abbott’s spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris said according to The Texas Tribune:

"Because [Chicago] Mayor [Brandon] Johnson is failing to live up to his city's ‘Welcoming City’ ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas, we are expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago, like the Biden Administration has been doing across the country.”

“Until President Biden steps up and does his job to secure the border, Texas will continue taking historic action to help our local partners respond to this Biden-made crisis.”
