January Breaks Border Record with 176K Migrants

Last month, migrants crossed the southern border at a record pace. In January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection saw 176,205 migrants cross the border setting a new record.

When comparing the numbers from 2022 to 2023, Border Patrol recorded almost 20,000 more migrants crossing the border. According to Border Patrol’s database, in January 2022 there were 157,358 migrant encounters.

From December 2023 to January 2024, there was a dramatic decrease as numbers went from 301,983 migrants to 176,205 migrant encounters.

According to Border Patrol, the greatest number of migrants crossed in Tucson, Arizona, and then Del, Rio, Texas, San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas in FY 2024.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has increased security along the border deploying the Texas National Guard. Additionally, Abbott is building the wall along the Texas-Mexico border which is expected to be more than former President Trump built during his term in office according to CBS.

Since Governor Abbott called for support along the border, Republican governors have sent military personnel to assist with Operation Lone Star. Last week, several governors stated they were sending support including Indiana, Georgia, and Montana.

Last week, Governor Abbott announced building a base in Del Rio to support the Texas National Guard which will improve operations according to a press release.

As the migrant crisis continues, Governor Abbott has taken the lead to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing as Arizona and California see more migrants cross their border.
