Since Texas Governor Greg Abbott began busing migrants to New York City in the summer of 2022, New York has had its hands full trying to support them. Mayor Eric Adams also visited Texas to understand the migrant issue, but since then, spending has continued to support them.

The New York Post recently reported New York City spends $387 a day supporting migrants. This comes out to about $11,610 a month. Mayor Adams is projected to spend close to $10 billion in the next fiscal year supporting migrants.

According to Governor Abbott, he has sent 39,100 migrants to New York City since August 2022 according to a press release. Other migrants arrived on their own to the City or were sent by other States and the City of El Paso.

Mayor Adams also plans to provide a pre-paid card to migrants which will provide them with about $13 a day. Adams believes this will help the City save money.

The idea of the prepaid cards is to cover the non-perishable food boxes migrants receive while they stay in hotels.

Mayor Adams said according to Fox 5:

"First, we want to be really clear: each migrant will get about $13 a day, so it's not automatically $1,000 as it has been reported.”

A City Hall spokesperson told The New York Post:

“In the last two months, Mayor Adams has laid out plans to save billions of taxpayer dollars as New York City manages a national humanitarian crisis, and the numbers show that our efforts are working.”

Here are more details about how much it costs to house migrants in New York City:

Do you think migrants should get this much money?
