Arizona is struggling with migrants crossing its southern border. This week, Governor Katie Hobbs wrote the federal government for $752 million in funding to help the state deal with the migrant crisis. Hobbs supported the request from Senators Mark Kelley and Kristen Sinema.

Governor Greg Abbott strengthened the Texas southern border which has caused migrants to travel further west according to PBS. As a result, Arizona has become the number one area migrants are entering.

Since starting Operation Lone Star, Governor Abbott has:

    • Started rebuilding the Texas wall
    • Asked for support from State governors who provided military and police support and equipment
    • Deployed the Texas National Guard to the border
    • Ordered the Department of Public Safety to border

This along with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection helped decrease the number of migrants entering Texas.

As Arizona sees a higher number of migrants enter the State, this caused Governor Hobbs to request more funding. On March 12, Governor Hobbs wrote a letter to the Senate and House Appropriations Committee. She requested funds should be sent to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Shelter and Services Program.

    Hobbs said according to Newsweek:

"I write to you today with a sense of urgency on behalf of the people of Arizona."
"As Governor, it is my duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities, especially in the face of challenges posed by border security."

Governor Hobbs said without the funding the State would not be able to keep Arizona safe.

Hobbs added according to KTAR News:

“Without additional support, critical services could be compromised, placing both migrants and local residents at risk. It’s time to prioritize practical solutions over political maneuvers.”

    In the letter, she wrote:

“My state has done everything possible to deliver safety and security to those communities. We need Congress to step up and do its job.”

What do you think about Arizona’s request?
