The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Senate Bill 4 before a Texas Appels Court prevented the State from enforcing it. Texas Governor Greg Abbott still believes the ruling would eventually support Texas.

Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 4 in December that allows local police to detain illegal immigrants and send them back to Mexico according to The Texas Tribune.

Not long after the ruling, Governor Abbott wrote on X:

“BREAKING: In a 6-3 decision SCOTUS allows Texas to begin enforcing SB4 that allows the arrest of illegal immigrants.
We still have to have hearings in the 5th circuit federal court of appeals.
But this is clearly a positive development.”

In a statement after the court ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote according to Fox News:

"Texas has defeated the Biden Administration’s and ACLU’s emergency motions at the Supreme Court. Our immigration law, SB 4, is now in effect. As always, it’s my honor to defend Texas and its sovereignty, and to lead us to victory in court."

In January, the Department of Justice filing stated according to Fox News:

"The United States brings this action to preserve its exclusive authority under federal law to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens," the DOJ lawsuit filed in January states. "Texas cannot run its own immigration system. Its efforts, through SB 4, intrude on the federal government’s exclusive authority to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens, frustrate the United States’ immigration operations and proceedings, and interfere with U.S. foreign relations."

Then the Biden administration disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling.

The White House issued a statement that said according to Fox News:

"S.B. 4 will not only make communities in Texas less safe, it will also burden law enforcement, and sow chaos and confusion at our southern border. S.B. 4 is just another example of Republican officials politicizing the border while blocking real solutions.”

If the ruling eventually supports Texas, Mexico already stated they would not allow migrants to enter the country. The Mexican government said on March 19 that they would not accept migrants “under any circumstances” according to News Nation Now.

Do you think Senate Bill 4 will get approved?
