Residents of El Paso should have received their property tax statements. Some may have received it as early as February 9 electronically.

El Paso Central Appraisal District or EP CAD for short sent out property tax statements.

Some residents are mad as the house value has increased negating the tax cut that went into effect several months ago.

Last year, Governor Greg Abbott signed the largest property tax cut in Texas according to his post on X. Most expected property would go lower.

According to Texas Comptroller, Texans saw their homestead exemption increase from $40,000 to $100,000. During the November 4 election, Texans voted to increase the property tax exemption.

Approximately 84% of Texas voted to have their property tax lowered according to KFOX 14.

El Paso Chief Appraiser Dinah Kilgore said according to KFOX 14:

"It's not dollars that you get, it's the amount that comes off your market value and then they apply the tax rate.”

    Kilgore added:

"A lot of folks are seeing their mortgages go down or refunds on escrow because of the $100,000 exception that was put on for the school taxes."

Most residents should have seen their mortgage payments go down or they received a refund.

Residents have until Wednesday, May 15, 2024, to appeal their property taxes. You have a little over three weeks to file your appeal.

    1. You can appeal online at https://epcad.org/search and look up your property to protest.

    2. You can protest in person at the CAD office at 5801 Trowbridge Drive, El Paso, TX 79925.

    3. You can work with a law firm that specializes in fighting property taxes to help with your case.

Make sure you get comps of homes that have sold to get your property tax lowered.

Time is running out. So don’t wait much longer to start your appeal.
