Massachusetts Sends Representatives to Texas to Tell Migrants Not to Come

Massachusetts is overwhelmed with migrants and the State governor is sending a party to southern states to help fix the issue. Governor Maura Healey is sending the group to meet with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Joint Task Force-North, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and families to inform them there was a lack of shelter availability in her State.

The team will visit the San Antonio Airport, the Migrant Resource Center, the Brownsville Welcome Center, and the Ursula Migrant Resource Center in McAllen.

Emergency Assistance Director General Scott Rice said according to a press release:

“This trip is an important opportunity to meet with families arriving in the U.S. and the organizations that work with them at the border to make sure they have accurate information about the lack of shelter space in Massachusetts.”

“It is essential that we get the word out that our shelters are full so that families can plan accordingly to make sure they have a safe place to go.”

Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll have prioritized work authorizations, job training, and housing assistance for migrant families.

Massachusetts GOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale called the trip “a publicity stunt” according to Boston 25:

“The Healey-Driscoll Administration’s recent decision to send its members to the border is nothing more than a publicity stunt that will neither address the migrant crisis in Massachusetts nor reduce the influx of migrants entering the Commonwealth.”

Last year, Governor Healey declared a State of Emergency over the migrant crisis.
