Governor Abbott Alerts Hurricane Response Team For Beryl

On July 3, Texas Governor Greg Abbott alerted agencies to prepare for Hurricane Beryl which is expected to reach Texas after Independence Day. The hurricane was a Category 5 with winds up to 150 mph.

After moving through the Caribbean Islands, it killed 10 people and destroyed several homes.

Governor Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to notify 39 Texas Emergency Management Council Agencies to support hurricane response and recovery efforts.

This hurricane is expected to the Laredo, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin areas according to USA Today.

Governor Abbott said according to a press release:

"Texas stands ready to deploy all available resources and support to our coastal communities as Hurricane Beryl approaches the state. Today, I directed TDEM to issue an advisory notice to our emergency management agencies to ensure Texas is prepared and equipped for hurricane response and recovery efforts. As Texans around the south coastal areas make holiday plans and visitors begin to travel for the holiday weekend, I urge them to take necessary safety precautions, remain weather aware, and have an emergency plan ready for themselves and their families. State and local officials will continue to work around the clock to monitor statewide weather conditions and help protect Texans."

Residents in Cameron County living in mobile homes were advised to evacuate or take precautions.

Governor Abbott posted on X earlier today:

This is nothing new for Governor Abbott as Texas has had several hurricanes every year. Last year Governor Abbott alerted TDEM and declared a disaster when Hurricane Nicolas came through in September according to this press release.
