Current numbers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection show the number of migrants crossing the southern border could set a record low. This change only showed up in the past few months.

The number of migrants crossing the border is at its lowest point in four years. This means the record number of migrants who crossed the border 2.4 million is off from a year ago according to Border Patrol.

This doesn’t mean migrants are not coming over. They still are but at a lower pace.

According to the Border Patrol database, 107,723 migrants were detained or captured through May. This is the lowest number in four years.

The Border Patrol encounters are shown below.

Some analysts could say the lower numbers are due to policies that Texas Governor Greg Abbott established since initiating Operation Lone Star in March 2021.

    • building the southern border wall
    • empowering the Texas National Guard to safeguard the border
    • the assistance from States to support Texas after he made calls for personnel and equipment

This caused more migrants to try entering the other border States, California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Governor Abbott blamed the border patrol issue on President Joe Biden.

After the death of Jocelyn Nungary by two illegal immigrants, Governor Abbott said on Fox according to a press release:

“The murder of Jocelyn was a direct result of Biden’s open border policies. There were multiple opportunities to stop these criminals: one was to have an effective border security plan that would deny illegal entry. Remember, Border Patrol apprehended both of these murderers and then let them go. At the time the murders took place, one of them had an ankle bracelet on them. They were supposed to be monitored, and [the Biden Administration] failed every step of the way. Jocelyn would be alive today had [President] Biden implemented a secure border plan.”
