The Republican National Convention starts today in this battleground state for the presidential election. Besides Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaking, several Texas politicians will appear.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott returned from his Asia trip and plans to speak. Besides Abbott, he will be joined by Senator Ted Cruz, U.S. Representatives Ronny Jackson of Amarillo, Monica De La Cruz of Edinburg, and Wesley Hunt of Houston.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson who changed parties from Democrat to Republican will also make an appearance and speak.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement on July 12 according to The Texas Tribune:

“Our state’s leaders should not be jetting off to applaud Donald Trump while Texans are still suffering,”
“The Texas Democratic Party calls upon Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and Ted Cruz to skip the Republican National Convention, and prioritize mitigating Beryl’s aftermath.”

Lieutenant Governor Patrick plans to skip the convention as Texas recovers from Hurricane Beryl

Donald Trump plans to speak despite getting shot last week while campaigning in Pennsylvania.

The Trump campaign said in a statement according to ABC News:

"President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party's nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again."

About 2,400 Republican delegates will officially nominate Trump on Monday after he won the nomination in March.
