SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) -- A Tomah man will spend 17 years in prison for a shooting in 2023.

A judge in Monroe County sentenced 24-year-old Krimzen Perea Tuesday. He will spend 17 years in prison and another 10 years under supervision by the Department of Corrections, according to a release from the Monroe County DA.

Perea pleaded guilty in May and was convicted of 1st degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon and aggravated battery.

The shooting occurred in June of last year. Perea shot a person twice at the 900 block of East McCoy Boulevard. That victim disarmed Perea and fled to a hotel for help. Officers found Perea at an apartment complex on Berry Avenue. The victim survived.

During sentencing, Monroe County DA Kevin Chroninger called Perea a threat to public safety in calling for a longer period of confinement.

"The defendant tracked, hunted and shot the victim like an animal," Chroninger said. "This type of behavior cannot be tolerated in a civilized society."

Chroninger called for a 40-year confinement. The DOC recommended 3 years.
