DeSantis Stuns the Nation by Declaring State of Emergency in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency after several hundred immigrants arrived in the Florida Keys.

In an executive order, DeSantis activated the National Guard and other state resources to “protect Floridians from the dangerous impacts of the Biden Border Crisis."

Blame it on Biden

DeSantis has built his entire career running a culture war against the Biden administration.

His new directive instructs state law enforcement and other state agencies to aid local governments in "responding to the alarming influx of migrants landing in the Florida Keys" and to stop attempted migrant landings.

“As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,” DeSantis said.

“That is why I am activating the National Guard and directing state resources to help alleviate the strain on local resources. When Biden continues to ignore his legal responsibilities, we will step in to support our communities.”

Numerous foreign nationals were detained after landing at Dry Tortugas National Park and nearby Florida Keys locations starting on New Year's Eve. Over the past few months, the Miami Border Patrol Sector has recorded a marked rise in arrests.

DeSantis added that the migrant influx has become “particularly burdensome for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.”

The Florida Keys and their neighborhood are a main destination for Cubans, which have notably increased under the Biden administration.

DeSantis' office said that while Florida has always welcomed refugees, like Cubans and victims of Communism, it has done so through legal means and with the help of the federal government.

Who's actually breaking the law?

The United States is supposed to welcome families and individuals escaping violence and political prosecution, according to international and federal law. However, the Supreme Court upheld Title 42, which gives states the right to refuse migrants on the basis of public health protection for the time being.

Asylum seekers still have the legal right to request shelter without being criminalized, separated from their children, or used for political stunts. DeSantis is indeed breaking the law here and exploiting poor families for his political gain. He's facing several lawsuits. We're yet to see the outcome.
