Do You Want Florida Democratic Party to Survive?

    2023-01-13

After Florida Democratic party chairman Manny Diaz quit on Monday, the house of cards started falling apart.

The chairman’s resignation came just two months after the midterm elections, in which Florida Democrats suffered a monumental loss.

Charlie Crist lost to Ron DeSantis so badly that nobody sees Floria as a swing state anymore. As a matter of fact, the 2022 election cycle left the party with no statewide elected Democrats.

    No Democrats left standing

Manny Diaz's lengthy resignation letter revealed in-depth details of the Democratic Party's downfall in Florida.

“The 2022 cycle was the final nail in the coffin,” Diaz stated.

In stark contrast with the rest of the nation, where Democrats won significant races, Republicans made significant gains in Florida during the midterm elections.

Governor Ron DeSantis won a landslide victory against Democrat rival Charlie Crist by almost 20 points.

    Republicans have something to say

“There ain’t as many Democrats around as there used to be. We had something to do with that in November 2022. It’s the first time in 150 years there’s not a single democrat in statewide office in the state of Florida,” said DeSantis when asked about Diaz’s resignation.

Although the resignation came as a surprise, the party's problems were apparent, according to Sean Foreman, a political science professor at Barry University.

“The problems are numerous for the Florida democratic party, and they’ve been mounting for decades,” Foreman said.

“I think the voters in Democratic primaries are really looking for more progressive candidates and messages. But party elites keep picking these moderates, who they think will help appeal to the middle, and it’s not working."

"They have to look at past failures and think about what’s a better path moving forward. And perhaps it is for the Florida Democratic Party to really turn to the left and become truly progressive in order to mobilize those types of voters in Florida because they seem to have lost the moderates to the Republican party right now.”
