DeSantis Takes Bold Action to Tackle Florida's Border Crisis

    2023-03-12

Governor Ron DeSantis discussed border security in a hangar at Craig Municipal Airport. The event's signage said "Biden's Border Crisis."

He referred to the federal government's recent response to Chinese spy balloons and current border policy as "humiliating" for the United States. DeSantis spoke at a gathering in Jacksonville, his first public appearance since touring several cities and states to promote support for law enforcement.

Earlier this year, DeSantis mentioned expanding the state's opioid response initiatives in Destin. On Thursday, the governor highlighted the risks associated with fentanyl "made in China."

DeSantis said the flights Florida paid for in September to transport close to 50 migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, using funds put aside that were allotted in the budget for transferring migrants out of Florida.

The program was repealed and replaced during the special legislative session in February, and DeSantis signed it into law despite the influx of immigration to the Florida Keys.

Relating to earlier legislation that forbade the state from partnering with organizations or corporations that assist people arriving through Mexico to enter Florida through government contracts.

DeSantis declared that the state would "beef up" its attempts to verify migrant workers' employment. Also, he successfully requested that a statewide grand jury be appointed to look into immigration-related concerns.

DeSantis assured that the government will "do everything" to "protect the people in Florida from what's going on at the border and the border crisis."

    Presidential moves

However, DeSantis seems to be considering his options for 2024. He's showcasing issues of national interest and launching strong campaigns against the current president. DeSantis even published an autobiography, a common move of someone gearing up for a presidential run.

Donald Trump is paying close attention, and many of Trump's supporters have already started coming after DeSantis both online and offline. Thousands of Twitter bots have been launched to slander DeSantis' name.

What do you think about DeSantis's reaction to the border situation?

Bold, but not very smart for Floridians…beating up on public school teachers, university faculty, state attorneys, corporate leaders and ordinary people who do not agree with your radical, revisionist world view, not to mention marginalizing trans folks & minorities, is wrong for Florida. America barely survived one weak, failed president…we don’t need another…
