Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter, a former Disney executive, was fired last week as the business started its first wave of mass layoffs, and he didn't hold back on spilling the beans on Disney.

He told Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that he was "right" to pursue his ongoing conflict with the media giant.

Perlmutter reportedly controls 30 million shares in the corporation, or about $3 billion. The former Disney executive said he told DeSantis last year, "Ron, you're right. Disney doesn't have the right to get involved with politics, and you know, I'm the largest individual shareholder."

    The First Amendment

Perlmutter, who served as chairman of Marvel Entertainment, claimed he warned other executives to avoid getting involved in politics, saying, "You're going to get hurt. It's a no-win situation."

The conflict arises from Disney's response to the so-called "Don't Say Gay" law, which restricts teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ex-CEO Bob Chapek condemned the move at the company's annual shareholder meeting after initially opting not to speak out on the subject in 2022. DeSantis did not take it well.

    DeSantis' War on Mickey Mouse

DeSantis responded by enacting legislation that gave him the authority to take over the organization's long-standing special tax district, formerly Reedy Creek.

Earlier on Monday, DeSantis requested an investigation into a last-minute deal that the previous Reedy Creek board signed, which makes the new oversight committee that DeSantis had appointed powerless. The board signed the deal in public. DeSantis overlooked such a simple move.

The company wants to reduce costs by $5.5 billion. Iger stated that additional job layoffs would affect the media giant later this month and just before the summer to meet the previously announced 7,000-job target.

In February, Disney also revealed plans to restructure the company into three primary business sectors – ESPN, Disney Entertainment, and Disney Parks.

Perlmutter asserted that he believes he was let go because he pushed for more incisive cost-cutting.
